Applied Biomimetic, Inc., a leader in primary research of membrane proteins for a number of industries, recently opened its new corporate headquarters and research and development operations in Maryland. The company – which relocated from Cincinnati, Ohio to Gaithersburg – selected a 7,000 square-foot space on Clopper Road for its headquarters and an 8,000 square-foot space on Perry Parkway to house its manufacturing and research and development facility. Applied Biomimetic plans to have more than 30 full-time workers in Montgomery County by the end of 2019.
“We are grateful for the support provided by the University of Cincinnati in hosting us and helping us develop our technology. After several years of research and incubation at their facilities, we achieved a level of scale in both research and manufacturing that required us to expand,” said CEO Steen Sondergaard Nissen. “After considering many locations, we chose the vibrant technology corridor of Gaithersburg, Maryland.” Nissen credits the availability of strong biotech talent as a key factor in the company’s relocation to Maryland.
Applied Biomimetic has a patented, cutting-edge protein membrane technology that provides a superior water treatment and purification system which has great potential in food/beverage manufacturing, pharmaceuticals and other areas.
“Applied Biomimetic is a great example of the innovative, young companies that we continue to attract to Maryland,” said Governor Larry Hogan. “Companies like this locating in our state reinforce our leadership in the life sciences and positions Maryland as a hub for the development of innovative treatments, diagnostics, and cures. We are excited to welcome Applied Biomimetic to Maryland.”
“With world-class universities, key federal agencies like the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the National Institutes of Health, a critical mass of life sciences companies, and a highly talented workforce, Maryland offers an outstanding environment for emerging companies like Applied Biomimetic to grow and collaborate with industry partners,” said Maryland Commerce Secretary Mike Gill.
To assist with project costs, the Maryland Department of Commerce has approved a $100,000 conditional loan through the Maryland Economic Development Assistance Authority and Fund (MEDAAF). Additionally, Montgomery County is providing a $55,000 grant through its MOVE Program, and the city of Gaithersburg is providing a $20,000 grant through its Economic Development Toolbox Fund. The company is also eligible for various state and local tax credits, including Maryland’s Job Creation Tax Credit.
“We welcome Applied Biomimetic to Montgomery County,” said Montgomery County Economic Development Corporation President and CEO David Petr. “The company’s unique combination of biotechnology and engineering has great potential to improve the water purification industry and others. Their work leverages Montgomery County’s strong biotech talents while expanding our industry reach. We see a great future in Montgomery County for this growing, innovative company.”
“We are so pleased that Applied Biomimetic recognized Montgomery County’s advantages for both research and development and manufacturing,” said Montgomery County Executive Ike Leggett.
“Attracting and maintaining innovative biotechnology companies strengthens our community and adds to its vibrancy,” said Jud Ashman, mayor of the city of Gaithersburg. “We look forward to welcoming Applied Biomimetic to Gaithersburg and witnessing its future growth.”
Danish Consul General and Head of the Danish Water Technology Alliance Jacob Vind added, “At the Danish Trade Council, we are working closely with Applied Biomimetic through our Water Technology Alliance in the U.S. We are happy to see our partners succeed, grow and expand their businesses, not only in Denmark but also here in the U.S. I’m proud that Danish companies are creating thousands of jobs all over the U.S. and excited to see Applied Biomimetic contribute to those numbers.”
