IA: TrinityRail to Build $30M, 250-Job Facility in Sioux City

Oct 17, 2014

TrinityRail Maintenance Services, Inc. (“TrinityRail”), a railcar service provider offering an array of services to the industrial, energy, transportation and construction sectors, will establish a new operating facility in the Southbridge Business Park in Sioux City, Iowa. TrinityRail has selected a 120-acre site for their expansion that will bring 250 new competitive-wage jobs and a $30 million capital investment to the community. Construction of the new facility is projected to begin this fall with completion scheduled for summer 2015.

TrinityRail has selected Sioux City to construct a new facility and provide a range of rail services including railcar modifications and rebuilds, repairs and maintenance, cleaning, inspections and testing. The demand for these services has increased tremendously in recent years throughout the U.S. and in the Upper Midwest. The construction of a new industrial lead track and “drop & pull” rail yard in Southbridge was a considerable factor in Trinity’s decision to expand in Sioux City.

“TrinityRail Maintenance Services, Inc. is proud to announce the development of a new facility that will conduct railcar maintenance and services in Sioux City, Iowa. Constructing a new maintenance and services facility in Iowa enhances our operational flexibility to serve the needs of our customers,” said D. Stephen Menzies, Senior Vice President and Group President TrinityRail.

The Iowa Economic Development Authority (IEDA) Board approved a $1.9 million application for the Targeted Jobs Withholding Tax Credit Program to support the project over eight years. The City Council will be asked to consider a financial assistance package, including the development site, a series of tax rebates of $150,000/year for five years and $1.4 million in assistance with grading costs of the land, as part of a development agreement with the company.

“TrinityRail’s decision to locate its new $30 million advanced manufacturing facility is great news for Siouxland and for Iowa,” said Debi Durham, Director of the Iowa Economic Development Authority. “The 250 high-paying jobs that will be created at this site are exactly the kind of quality jobs that raise the standard of living for Iowans.”

“This project supports the vision and investment made in Southbridge Business Park,” said Mayor Bob Scott. “The extensive investment made by TrinityRail will bring skilled jobs and create a substantial economic ripple effect within our community.”

“TrinityRail is an outstanding company and one that we are fortunate to have investing in Sioux City,” said Chris McGowan, President of The Siouxland Initiative. Their decision to locate here confirms that when our community works together we can continue to grow our economy by creating new opportunities for individuals and businesses alike.”

Workforce Initiatives

The City, State of Iowa, The Siouxland Initiative and Western Iowa Tech Community College are working closely with Trinity to locate and train prospective new employees. Community partners have been engaged in recent months with several new initiatives to attract and train new and existing workers in the area. These efforts include expanding customized training available through Western Iowa Tech, implementing the new Home Base Iowa program to attract veterans to Sioux City and the creation of a new workforce attraction program funded through Missouri River Historical Development. Trinity’s Sioux City operations will include positions in executive management, administration, welding, painting and production.

Terry Murrell, Western Iowa Tech Community College President said, “TrinityRail is a very progressive company that realizes the importance of employee talent in helping to make them successful.  We have already started to create a relationship with Trinity to ensure we can help them build a trained workforce.”
