Ortec, Inc. Completes 2nd Round of Expansions; Create 30 New Jobs; Invest $7.2M

Jan 11, 2009

The Greenville Area Development Corporation and Ortec Inc. announced completion of the company's second round of expansions and improvements at its manufacturing facility in Piedmont, Greenville County, S.C. The plan reflects a combined investment of $7.2 million investment by the company and the addition of some 30 jobs at the facility.

Ortec, Inc. was founded in 1980 and is a leading biomaterial and polymer technology company serving the personal care, medical device, and pharmaceutical markets. Headquartered in Easley, the company now employs over 200 people and has facilities in Easley, Piedmont, and Pendleton, South Carolina. Ortec offers custom manufacturing services to both domestic and international Global 500 corporations.

In its most recent expansion phase, Ortec added a 2,600-square-foot Class 100,000 clean room with USP water and cold storage capabilities. The just-completed expansion followed on the heels of the first phase, which added 2,200 square feet of manufacturing space along with additional equipment and facilities to accommodate raw materials and finished goods. The additional employees at the Piedmont location consisted of a mix of scientists and engineers from a variety of disciplines, along with production operators and support function personnel.

Expansion of the Piedmont cGMP facility allows Ortec to extend its ability to provide custom manufacturing to the medical field, while also serving the food industry, pharmaceutical, medical device and drug delivery industries.

"We are proud of the way our biomedical business has grown over the past few years," stated Scott Brotherton, Ortec Piedmont Plant Site Manager. "These additions will not only ensure future growth of our current business, but also provide us capabilities to serve new customers as well."

"Ortec would like to express our appreciation to GreenvilleCounty, the Greenville Area Development Corporation (GADC) and the community of Piedmont for their support in helping us plan and execute this expansion," Brotherton added. "Their combined efforts were instrumental in helping us manage the expansion process and make this announcement a reality."

"Ortec is a leader in the chemical industry, specializing in polymer technology, medical material and custom chemical synthesis. Ortec has the innovation and expertise necessary to offer custom manufacturing services to its customers. This announcement is a reflection that the state's business-friendly climate and skilled workforce are working to grow existing businesses, attract new investment and encourage growth in high-tech manufacturing. Thanks to the team effort of state and local officials, GreenvilleCounty will benefit from this investment now and in the future," said Joe Taylor, Secretary of Commerce.

"We're pleased that Ortec continues to grow and enjoy the advantages that GreenvilleCounty offers their company," said Jay Rogers, Chairman of the Greenville Area Development Corporation Board. "As a home-grown business with innovative processes, global customers and a bright future, the company is a valued member of our business community, and a reaffirmation that specialty manufacturing companies can thrive and succeed here."
