AL: Plastipak to Invest $10M, Expand Birmingham Facility

Aug 26, 2016

Plastipak Packaging Inc. will invest $10.4 million to add two manufacturing lines to its Birmingham-area facility, where it produces plastic bottles for the beverage industry, the Birmingham Business Alliance said.

“Plastipak is extremely appreciative of the support it has received from the local community and business organizations,” said William C. Young, president and CEO of Plastipak Holdings. “The Plastipak Team is excited to be able to expand our plant again and to continue to serve our regional customers with high-quality products that are manufactured in the state of Alabama.”

Plastipak’s expansion, which will add least five jobs, is a boost for the Jefferson County Metropolitan Park in McCalla, where it currently employs 117 people. This is the latest in a series of expansions at Plastipak’s JeffMet facility.

“Its expansions over the years indicate a strong local workforce and an ideal central location to serve its customers throughout the Southeast,” said Ted vonCannon, executive director of the Jefferson County Economic and Industrial Development Authority, which manages the 739-acre JeffMet industrial park.

Plastipak worked with the BBA and officials in Jefferson County on the expansion. The Jefferson County Commission today approved statutory abatements valued at nearly $427,000 over 10 years for the project.

“Plastipak is a long-time and highly valued investor in the county’s JeffMet Business Park,” Jefferson County Commissioner David Carrington said. “This business expansion project brings additional investment and jobs to western Jefferson County.”
