SC: Benefitfocus Opens New Design, Engineering Facility, Creating 300 Jobs

Dec 17, 2012

Benefitfocus, a leading healthcare and benefits technology provider, was joined by South Carolina Governor Nikki Haley and Charleston Mayor Joe Riley as the company unveiled a new Design and Engineering Building on its Daniel Island campus. The new 80,000-square-foot facility can accommodate 475 associates at capacity, adding to the company’s 68,000-square-foot corporate headquarters. Along with the grand opening of this multi-million dollar investment, Benefitfocus announced its plans to add 300 new software engineering and professional jobs over the next 24 months.

“Our super-talented team of software engineers is truly dedicated to the special work they do and solving the complex issues software design presents,” stated Shawn Jenkins, Benefitfocus President and CEO. “We are engineering a better way for companies to manage benefits, and raising the interaction in a social workplace like this is just the beginning in creating the best place to work for the best minds in the country.”

Founded in 2000, Benefitfocus has experienced steady growth in response to the accelerating demand for cloud-based benefits management technology. Since the Charleston-based software company moved its corporate headquarters from Mount Pleasant to the Daniel Island campus in October 2006, it has more than doubled the number of associates. Benefitfocus currently has more than 700 associates in offices in Greenville, S.C., Tulsa, Oklahoma and San Francisco, California.

“It is great to be here with Benefitfocus and a great day in South Carolina,” said Gov. Nikki Haley at the ribbon cutting ceremony. “The founders of Benefitfocus, Shawn Jenkins and Mason Holland, constantly say that it is their associates that make them good. In my mind it's the companies that make us great and Benefitfocus is one of the reasons that we have become the ‘it’ state in South Carolina.

A growing client list of large employers, top insurance carriers and government entities gives Benefitfocus the opportunity to continuously invest in recruiting top talent that has made them the leader in designing and engineering cloud-based healthcare and benefits technology. More than 18 million members and 300,000 employers use the BENEFITFOCUS® Platform to shop, enroll, manage and exchange all their benefits in one place.

"When a company like Benefitfocus decides to grow in South Carolina, it shows the world that our state is a competitive place for high-tech firms to set up shop. This announcement also will bring hundreds of new jobs to the Lowcountry that will have impact,” said Secretary of Commerce Bobby Hitt.

“Benefitfocus has been a great corporate citizen in Berkeley County for years and we are delighted to see them continue to grow in our region and county,” said Berkeley County Supervisor Dan Davis.
