AL: Tuscaloosa-Area Organizations Launch 'Anchor Tuscaloosa' Student Retention Program

Oct 28, 2024

Fuel Alabama, a program of Innovate Alabama and EDPA, in partnership with the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority, The Chamber of Commerce of West Alabama, and Visit Tuscaloosa have launched a new program to help demonstrate why Tuscaloosa County and Alabama is a dynamic place for students to grow roots and start their lives as young professionals.

Anchor Tuscaloosa, a talent attraction and retention initiative for college students, will feature community-building activities through five sessions during the 2025 spring semester. The program will engage the next generation of young adults that have an interest in growing professionally, expanding their network, and deepening their knowledge of the local community.

This enrichment opportunity is available for undergraduate and graduate students from The University of Alabama, Stillman College, and Shelton State Community College that have completed at least 30 hours of credit prior to December 31, 2024, and comes at no cost. Participants will experience a Tuscaloosa-area staycation, engage with local and statewide elected o􀆯icials as well as business and nonprofit leaders, garner an understanding of the workforce opportunities around the area, and enjoy the area’s quality of life first-hand.

“In partnership with many organizations, and our local government entities, we understand how important it is that we interact with our college students in a meaningful way to connect them to our community,” said Justice Smyth, executive director for the Tuscaloosa County Economic Development Authority. “This program will empower us to engage with students who have a keen interest in locating here post-graduation. We’re excited to showcase why Tuscaloosa County is a vibrant place to live and work.”

The inaugural program will accept up to 40 participants in its inaugural year. Applications will be accepted October 22 – December 1, 2024, and those accepted will be notified by December 20, 2024.
