AR: Medline to Build New State-of-the-Art Medical Supply Distribution Center in Maumelle, Arkansas

New Building to Open Spring 2013 and Utilize Latest Energy Efficient Technology

MUNDELEIN, Ill., September 24, 2012 — Medline Industries, Inc., the nation's largest privately held manufacturer and distributor of medical and surgical supplies, will open a new state-of-the-art distribution facility in Maumelle, Ark., in late spring 2013, the company announced today. Construction is expected to begin this fall for the new 100,000-square-foot facility, which will service Medline’s health care customers, including hospitals, nursing homes, surgery centers and home care agencies throughout the state of Arkansas. Maumelle is located 10 miles northwest of Little Rock.

Initially, the facility will create approximately 10-15 new jobs in Central Arkansas.

The distribution center, which will be Medline’s 37th in the United States, will be constructed with the latest energy efficient technology and undergo LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification review for the design, construction and operation of high performance green buildings. LEED uses a rating system that measures a building's performance in energy efficiency, CO2 emission reduction and improved indoor environmental quality both during construction as well as the daily operation of the building.

“We are extremely pleased to have Medline as a corporate partner in Maumelle. Their new distribution center will be Maumelle’s first LEED certified building,” said Maumelle Mayor Mike Watson. “We know Medline will be an asset to Maumelle and Arkansas with their innovative products and programs in medical supplies. And certainly new jobs are always welcome, but this is especially true in today’s economy.”

Some of the cost efficient technologies employed at the new facility will include:
• Motion sensors combined with advanced high-output, energy-saving lighting to keep lights off in aisles when not in use.
• Daylight sensors in the light fixtures to take advantage of the natural daylight introduced to the building through more than 200 skylights. As long as the skylights bring in sufficient light, the light fixtures stay off.
• High-output T5 light fixtures (more energy efficient) and on/off sensors – there are no actual on/off switches in the warehouse – they are controlled with the motion and daylight sensors.
• Super-sized fans to reduce dependence on electricity for air conditioning and heating.
• Recycling programs, including all corrugated boxes, office paper and fluorescent bulbs.

Medline has recently been recognized for its commitment to the environment, including the Practice Greenhealth Champion for Change Award and the Novation Environmental Excellence Leadership Award.

"We are excited to be a member of the Maumelle community and the greater Little Rock metropolitan area and offer our products, clinical programs and supply chain services to health care providers in the greater Arkansas area," said Bill Abington, Medline's president of Global Operations. "The building design and construction not only demonstrate Medline's commitment to the environment, but they also incorporate world-wide best practices in layout, technology, and distribution methods."
