FL: Biotech Firm to Open Office, Lab in Orlando, Creating 100 Jobs

Jul 23, 2019
Cranbury, New Jersey-based tech and biopharmaceutical company Amicus Therapeutics Inc. has applied for a building permit to occupy a roughly 36,000-square-foot lab and office space in the $30 million Guidewell Innovation Center, according to city of Orlando data.

The firm plans to open an office with a laboratory in Lake Nona's 650-acre Medical City. The buildout will cost roughly $7.7 million. It would be the global company's first Central Florida office and is expected to bring 100 jobs.

The company will invest another $11.3 million into its space at the Guidewell Innovation Center and create roughly 40 jobs, spokesman Marco Winkler said. However, the company is seeking permits now to be ready just in case it decides to open a Central Florida location, and a formal decision hasn't been made on whether or not Amicus will have an office in Lake Nona, he added.

The Guidewell office would be in addition to Amicus' previous Lake Nona plans. In June, Amicus sought amended incentives from Orlando City Council to bring 100 new high-wage jobs and a 30,000- to 50,000-square-foot facility to Lake Nona, which represented a potential $50 million capital investment.

Previously, Amicus sought incentives to bring 316 jobs and to build a 200,700-square-foot development at the southwest corner of Laureate Boulevard and Medical City Drive, which represented a nearly $180 million investment. Orlando City Council approved a roughly $380,000 incentive deal Aug. 20 to attract the company to Central Florida. Amicus reportedly was considering other cities for a new facility.
