In the pursuit of economic progress, the path to growth is often paved with strategic actions and consistent effort. Recently, Oswego County, NY experienced a noteworthy acceleration in its growth trajectory following the award of a $2.5 million grant to the County of Oswego Industrial Development Agency (IDA) by the U.S. Economic Development Administration (EDA). These vital funds are designated to bolster the infrastructure in the expanded sector of the L. Michael Treadwell Oswego County Industrial Park, nestled in the Town of Schroeppel.
The initiative, which kicked off in 2021 with the procurement of a 185-acre expansion site by the IDA, effectively doubled the size of the existing industrial park. This significant decision was prompted by the dwindling usable space within the current 135-acre industrial park and an increased interest from both new and expanding businesses. The federal investment will provide public infrastructure that will include the construction of over 3,700 feet of new public roadway, over 4,200 feet of new sanitary sewer, and over 3,700 feet of new public waterlines. Complementing the EDA investment, $2.5 million in IDA funds with be matched to prepare 10 shovel ready sites. Notably, the strategic site resides within a 10-mile radius of the $100B mega semifab site of Micron, benefitting from convenient highway and rail access.
“After years of planning, preparation and collaboration, this federal investment will be the catalyst to transform the Oswego County Industrial Park into a prime destination for new innovative industries, creating additional high paying job opportunities and further diversifying our economy,” said Oswego County IDA CEO Austin Wheelock. “Thank you to our Federal representatives Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer, Senator Kirsten Gillibrand, and Congresswoman Claudia Tenney for their bipartisan support to secure funding for this important economic initiative. We especially want to acknowledge Senator Schumer and his office for their advocacy efforts to make this project a priority funding initiative.”
Nestled beside Lake Ontario, Oswego County boasts an abundant water supply, a skilled workforce, robust training programs, and the generation of 5,500MW of power, including nuclear, hydro, and solar/wind sources. These attributes position the county as an enticing magnet for advanced manufacturing and semiconductor supply chain businesses, with the potential to generate hundreds of new high-paying jobs and attract hundreds of millions of dollars in capital investment. With funding firmly in place, the comprehensive development is projected to culminate within three years, with the entire site anticipated to be operational by August 2027.
This bold initiative in Oswego County stands as a testament to how strategically directed federal investment can serve as a catalyst for sustained economic growth and prosperity, promising a bright future for the region.
