New York City: Quality of Life on an Unmatched Scale

Oct 08, 2024

For business decision-makers, choosing a new city is no small task. It’s a decision based on countless questions—for the business itself, but also about the suitability for its employees and their families. One question that has to be asked: Will my employees be happy here?

When New York City is the city in question, the answer is clear, but it goes beyond the city’s postcard images of towering skyscrapers, bustling crowds, and Lady Liberty. Because New York isn’t just a place to live. It’s a way to live—among the parks, schools, transit, and culture that fill the city’s five boroughs.

In New York City, global capital that it is, all of this doesn’t just create a “quality of life,” but a “quantity of life” like no other US city.

Seeing Green

Zoom out on a map of New York City and it’s hard not to see green—along waterfronts, throughout business districts, and anchoring entire neighborhoods.

Some of the most iconic parks in the world—Central Park, Prospect Park, and Hudson River Park—are simply the poster children for the city’s 30,000 acres of parks, amounting to 14 percent of the city’s total area and including over 5,000 properties, from beaches to community gardens to green streets.

And the parks are there for playing, with baseball and soccer fields, playgrounds, basketball courts, tennis courts, public pools, golf courses, and more in the thousands.

A+ in Education

Whether thinking of your workforce of the future or simply your kids’ schooling, education in New York City leaves little to be desired. The city’s public school system is the largest in the US, with 1 million+ students attending 1,800+ schools. And families don’t have to wait for kindergarten—the system offers a free pre-K seat to every four-year-old in the city, and further, every district offers free full-day 3-K.

Fast-forward to college, and the City University of New York (CUNY) spans 25 colleges offering 2,800+ majors and programs across the city. The university prides itself on its affordability, with 67 percent of undergrads attending tuition-free and 75 percent of students graduating with zero debt.  The robust public university exists alongside some of the country’s finest private institutions, including Columbia and NYU.

Connected by Transit

New York City is big, for sure, but it’s made smaller by its transit network—across the five boroughs and beyond. The Metropolitan Transportation Authority is North America’s largest transportation network, including the nation’s largest bus fleet and more subway and commuter rail cars than all other US transit systems combined.

Connecting neighborhoods and commercial centers, the system serves 3.8 million subway riders and 1.3 million bus passengers daily.

On the water, the citywide NYC Ferry system offers faster commutes and greater access to the city's waterfronts. With 25 landings across 70 nautical miles, NYC Ferry provides New Yorkers and visitors with a convenient and affordable option that connects communities to jobs, recreation, and each other.

And NYC is accessible from points beyond, serving as the hub for the nation’s largest commuter railroads—Long Island Railroad, Metro North, New Jersey Transit, and PATH—connecting to communities in New Jersey, Long Island, Connecticut, and other areas.

For travelling farther afield, the NYC area is home to three major airports—JFK, LaGuardia, and Newark—which are serving more passengers than ever and seeing unprecedented investment.

Culture Everywhere

It goes without saying that New York City is a cultural capital, but not just for Broadway and the Met. Every borough is home to a wealth of culture—founded in the city’s diversity and history—from Brooklyn’s Chinatown to the Bronx’s Arthur Avenue to the melting pot of Queens and historic towns in Staten Island.

The city’s culture isn’t just there to visit—it’s part of life for 8 million+ New Yorkers who live down the street, around the corner, or a short-walk or transit-ride away from food, art, music and an overall richness of life unlike any other city.

In New York City—with its parks, schools, transit, and culture—the quality of life is undeniable… but the quantity of life is unmatched. Discover more at choose.nyc
