Invest Ontario is supporting Siemens Canada’s $150 million investment to establish a Global AI Manufacturing Technologies R&D Center for Battery Production at its headquarters in Oakville, Ontario.
This R&D investment will create up to 90 highly skilled jobs and play an important role in cementing Ontario’s leadership in the battery manufacturing sector by fuelling innovation across the supply chain.
The new R&D centre, located initially at Siemens Canada’s head office in Oakville, will focus on developing cutting-edge AI manufacturing technologies with an initial emphasis on battery and EV production. It will leverage Siemens' expertise in AI, edge computing, machine vision, digital twins, and cybersecurity to drive innovation and efficiency in battery production.
“The establishment of a Global AI Manufacturing Technologies R&D Center for Battery Production in Canada will help advance Canada’s national battery and EV ecosystem and will foster collaboration with higher education institutions and battery manufacturers to innovate production in the industry,” said Faisal Kazi, President and CEO, Siemens Canada. “With investment from Siemens and the support of the provincial and federal governments, this initiative will not only enhance Canada’s competitiveness in the global battery market but also contribute to the country’s economic growth.”
The R&D project will be supported with a $7.2 million forgivable loan through the Invest Ontario Fund, subject to reaching a definitive agreement.
“Siemens’ latest investment in Ontario is a vote of confidence in our world-class workforce, our investment friendly business environment and our growing end-to-end electric vehicle supply chain,” said the Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario. “I’m thrilled to welcome this investment and build on our productive partnership with Siemens, which stretches back more than a century.”
Ontario’s end-to-end EV supply chain, expertise in advanced manufacturing, and dynamic technology ecosystem make it an ideal location to develop next-generation solutions for the battery manufacturing sector.
By establishing its global R&D centre in Ontario, Siemens Canada is tapping into a diverse pool of top-tier scientific and engineering talent. The company will also partner with local battery manufacturers and world-class universities to pilot research outcomes.
“Thanks to our world-class workforce and competitive business environment, Ontario continues to be a global destination for investment and job creation, particularly in our EV and EV battery sector,” said the Hon. Vic Fedeli, Minister of Economic Development, Job Creation and Trade. “We’re thrilled to welcome this latest investment by Siemens, along with the up to 90 good-paying jobs it will create in Ontario.”
This project builds on Siemens Canada’s century-long presence in Ontario since 1912. Headquartered in Oakville, the company has over 4,400 employees and 37 office and production facilities across Canada, delivering digital and sustainability solutions for industry, infrastructure, mobility, and healthcare.
“Siemens Canada’s global R&D centre will equip Ontario battery manufacturers with the technology needed to stay ahead in a fast-evolving industry,” said Khawar Nasim, Invest Ontario’s incoming CEO. “This investment marks an important milestone for Ontario’s growing leadership in battery manufacturing, and it is a testament to the province’s leadership in the automotive sector.”
