BMW Group, alongside state and local officials, broke ground recently on its new Plant Woodruff high-voltage battery assembly facility. Upon completion, the facility will be over 1 million square feet and employ approximately 300 at the high-tech, advanced manufacturing production site.
The facility is part of the next phase of BMW Group’s October 2022 $1.7 billion investment announcement to prepare Plant Spartanburg for electric vehicle production. BMW Manufacturing President and CEO Dr. Robert Engelhorn spoke on behalf of several representatives from BMW’s leadership group.
Governor Henry McMaster and Secretary of Commerce Harry M. Lightsey III also participated in the ceremony, giving a nod to the immense collaboration — between local, state, federal and private sector partners — to bring the facility online.
This event happened on the heels of a related groundbreaking in Florence County. AESC, a Japanese advanced electric vehicle technology company, broke ground on its new battery production facility June 7, 2023, as part of an EV supplier partnership with BMW's Plant Spartanburg.
