Smith’s Food & Drug will construct a new Smith’s Marketplace store at Pioneer Road and Bluegrass Way in St. George, Utah. A groundbreaking was held on October 3 with executives from Smith’s and officials from St. George City.
The 123,000 square foot multi-department store will offer complete grocery store offerings and services including sushi and Starbucks Coffee cafe, fresh made to order salads and sandwiches, hot/cold chicken, fresh seafood, Boar’s Head Meats and Murray’s Cheese. Additionally, the new store will have a floral department, apparel, household goods, drive through pharmacy, online grocery Pick Up, and on-site Smith’s Fuel Center.
Unique to the $31 million St. George Marketplace store will be a cordoned off parking section and golf cart path exclusively designed to accommodate golf carts from the nearby SunRiver Community. When completed in the Fall of 2024, Smith’s anticipates hiring 230 employees.
As part of the company’s ongoing effort to moderate energy use, the new store will have the latest energy efficient technologies in overhead lighting and cooling.
During construction, Smith’s will require the builder, R & O Construction, to recycle 90% of the project’s total non-hazardous waste such as scrap wood, metal, cardboard, concrete brick, and plastic as part of Smith’s Zero Hunger | Zero Waste initiative.
“At Smith’s, we understand the pivotal role we play in the St. George community,” said Kenny Kimball, president of Smith’s Food & Drug Stores. “We have proudly served Southern Utah since 1989. We’re the first stop families make when they want to create a special meal, to celebrate a milestone or a favorite holiday. We provide many of our neighbors with their first job – and hopefully they choose to stay with us for their entire career. And we are deeply rooted in our communities as we work to end hunger and eliminate food waste. We strongly believe no one in St George should go to bed hungry, and we continue to work toward this moonshot goal.”
