UT: Provo Airport Breaks Ground on Three-Year Expansion Project

Apr 17, 2025

Following a historic year in 2024 that saw nearly 900,000 passengers take flight through Provo Airport (PVU), officials with Provo City, Utah County and the State of Utah gathered recently to celebrate the groundbreaking of the next chapter in PVU’s remarkable growth.

With a strategic mix of ultra-low-cost carriers and service from American Airlines, Provo Airport has quickly become a rising star for leisure and business travelers alike—delivering convenience, comfort, and connectivity right from the heart of Utah Valley.

“’Anywhere You Want to Go—Fly Provo,’ isn’t just a slogan—it’s a promise,” said Brian Torgersen, Provo Airport Director. “Thanks to American Airlines’ frequent daily flights to Dallas-Fort Worth (DFW) and Phoenix-Sky Harbor (PHX), travelers from PVU now enjoy easy access to over 270 global destinations, both domestic and international. And the connectivity will only improve with our expansion from four gates to ten gates.”

With funding secured and demand soaring, PVU is preparing for a major expansion:

Construction begins April 2025 on an expanded apron, set to be completed by November.
The current terminal will expand to ten gates—with three new gates on both the north and south sides—expected to open by late 2028.
“The Provo Airport is more than a runway—it’s a runway to the future,” said Provo Mayor Michelle Kaufusi. “This expansion positions PVU not just as a regional airport, but as a vital part of Utah’s growing transportation network—ready to welcome the world, including visitors for the 2034 Winter Olympics.”

“As Provo continues to grow, PVU is keeping pace, offering residents and visitors alike a modern, accessible alternative to larger airports—without the hassle,” said Mayor Kaufusi.

During her expansion groundbreaking speech, Mayor Kaufusi called the Provo Airport the 'little airport that could.'

"You see, the Provo Airport has always been a story waiting to be told. For more than 30 years, plans gathered dust—waiting for the right moment, the right people, the right momentum. And then something changed. Not in the air, but on the ground. This community rallied. A team of dreamers and doers came together and said, 'Let’s do this.' And so, the little airport that could... did.

Today, we stand on the threshold of a new chapter—one that wouldn’t be possible without our incredible partners.

The State of Utah,
Utah County,
The FAA, and the
Mountainland Association of Governments
Each played a critical role, not just in cheering us on, but in helping us build something extraordinary. Their support enabled us to expand boldly and wisely—with no new debt to the airport. That means no raised costs, no stifled growth. With their help, the sky truly has become the limit for Provo Airport.

But Provo Airport is more than functional—it’s familiar. A reflection of our city—in its design, its art, its views, and its ‘Welcome Home’ spirit. And let’s not forget the impact beyond the terminal. This little airport is creating big opportunities—bringing in $203 million in annual economic impact. Jobs. Connections. Momentum. It’s an economic win-win not just for Provo, but for the entire region and the state.

This airport belongs to all of us. It was built by the community, for the community. And its future? That will be shaped by you. We’re inviting the public to the first of three open houses to learn more about what’s next for PVU and to share your vision for the next two decades. We need your voices as we chart our next course.

So today, as we break ground, we’re not just digging into dirt—we’re digging into dreams. Thank you to everyone who believed in this little airport that could. Because now—we know it can."
