Publix Super Markets plans to add a dry grocery warehouse to a new distribution center being built in Greensboro, N.C., reports Supermarket News, adding another 1.2 million square feet of space to the center.
In February, the Lakeland, Fla.-based supermarket chain broke ground on a 940,000-square-foot refrigerated warehouse in Greensboro in the project’s first phase. The new facility will be Publix’s 10th distribution center overall and its first in North Carolina. The company said the Greensboro DC will provide more efficient delivery of dry and refrigerated groceries to its stores in the Carolinas and Virginia.
“Publix is excited to be expanding our presence in the Greensboro community,” Maria Brous, director of communications at Publix, said in a statement. The entire project is slated to be completed by the fourth quarter of 2022, three years ahead of schedule.
Publix’s nine other DCs are in Boynton Beach, Deerfield Beach, Jacksonville, Lakeland, Miami, Orlando and Sarasota, Fla.; Lawrenceville, Ga.; and McCalla, Ala.
North Carolina and Virginia are growth areas for Publix. The grocer recently opened a 51,447-square-foot store in Marvin, N.C., and a 45,600-square-foot store in Raleigh, N.C., following a 49,533-square-foot store opened in North Chesterfield, Va., in late August.
Overall, Publix currently operates 1,255 stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina, North Carolina and Virginia.
